The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Singapore Gets An Industrial–Chic Cafe

Singapore

Image Creative Design have created an inviting space for the owners of Thus Coffee in Singapore, where varied influences converge and work together harmoniously.

The brief from the owners of Thus Coffee, a young married couple, was for a raw, minimalist and rustic space where the young crowd would love hanging out.

Taking all that into account, cement screed flooring and black painted ceilings bring in the industrial vibe, while the dark wood tables and chairs add a rustic tone and allow for flexible seating arrangements. The original counter was kept but plastered over with cement. A recessed niche clad in metal-look laminate and a stainless steel backsplash across the original white subway tiles come together to enhance the industrial aesthetic.

This cafe offers a good range of seating configurations to cater to different customers. The setting in this corner can sit a group of seven comfortably, with vintage accents in the form of the glass pendant lamp and black upholstered chairs adding character to the space. “The vintage look is really in-trend,” notes the designers.

A solid, organically-shaped wooden dining table takes pride of place in this area. The nature-inspired, rustic vibe blends in well with the retro lines of the chairs and the modern chandelier. The white subway tiles help to brighten the otherwise raw and sombre palette.
