Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Cabin tranquillity in the Balinese uplands

Indonesia

Kabinji

Located in the hills north of Ubud, Kabinji is a delightfully modest and peaceful cabin made from mostly reclaimed timber.

Kabinji Bali Bed & Breakfast Tampaksiring is a privately designed and constructed cabin located roughly halfway between the densely urbanised Denpasar to the south and Mount Batur to the north. Within the vicinity of popular Ubud, it’s a deeply peaceful spot of intense greenery – a lush escape from the traffic outside and the ideal place to unwind on the Indonesian island.

Whether it’s for luxury seekers, hikers or party-goers, Kabinji provides a slice of peace, perhaps ideally fitted into a wider itinerary across the island as a multi-night escape. The timber cabin is itself refreshingly modest, constructed locally and featuring a high ceiling, outdoor bathing and even a vinyl record player – and all set within a private, secure garden. Walled off, the garden is filled with tropical plants as well as featuring outdoor seating, a small pond and a firepit.

The single-room cabin faces directly onto the garden, maximising the intense greenery and blurring the boundaries between inside and out. Kabinji boasts a terrace and a picnic area as well as complimentary private parking.

Guestrooms offer a balcony and a place for dining, along with a writing table, mini-fridge bar and tea/coffee making equipment. Enjoying views of the peaceful garden while breakfast is delivered is a highlight of any stay here.

The marvellous and historic Pura Tirta Empul – a Hindu temple with a holy bathing site and popular as a place of ritual purification – is only 2.3 km away, while Mount Kawi is a ten-minute ride. Bali Pulina is similarly close by, while there are many neighbours reachable by foot offering the distinctively local Luwak coffee, with some spots offering stunning rainforest views.
