Art that makes a residence sing

What is involved when selecting art for a residence? Curatorial+Co’s Sophie Vander knows the process well.

Sophie Vander, Curatorial+Co. gallery director has long been a champion of building understanding around the visual arts and how to use contemporary art in design best.

Curatorial+Co often provides advice specifically for interior design professionals. By sharing this first-hand knowledge and insight into the process of working with contemporary art, galleries and artists to create unique interiors that stand the test of time.

Vander moreover, understands that the art world can be tricky for design specialists to navigate, especially interior designers who are juggling the roles of designer and art educator within a budget: “At the gallery, we work day in and day out with interior designers and stylists that are looking to elevate their projects with art and so often see that the avenues for accessing impactful yet affordable pieces are lacking due to budget constraints or lack of confidence regarding the art world. This inspired us to create an event where we pass on the skills and approaches we’ve learnt when placing and advocating for original art in all kinds of design projects,” says Vander.

The team has even hosted events where they discussed the misconceptions around working with art, and provided practical tools for choosing art, budgeting for art, speaking to gallerists, commissioning bespoke pieces and discussing art choices with clients.

“We find that collaboration is key. Understanding expert knowledge, you can access the arts and design communities and how you can work together to create stunning final projects. We help designers strategise within their own projects and know when to call in art consultants to aid in myriad ways and budget levels.”
