The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

A light bulb moment: The mishap that sparked a luminous collaboration

Volker Haug Studio

Volker Haug Studio & Flack Studio expand the Me and You collaboration with six new pieces.

Within the world of design, where materiality and form shape the conversation, Volker Haug Studio and Flack Studio have once again asserted their shared vernacular with the expansion of their collaborative collection, Me and You. Originally unveiled at Milan Design Week 2024, this partnership culminates with the introduction of six new lighting pieces.

Born of serendipity, Me and You originated during a Flack Studio installation when a vintage wall sconce fitting was irreparably damaged. Initially constrained by a 20 x 20 cm backplate, the design process evolved into an exploration of materials and forms, resulting in a series of lighting. The evolution of the collection as articulated by Volker Haug was catalysed by insights gleaned from observing how clients engaged with the designs in Milan, where the interaction highlighted the enthusiasm towards Me and You.

The additions include the Tux Pendant and Tux Wall Light joining the existing Tux Table Lamp. These designs feature fibreglass shells, cast glass elements and brass detailing. The Fleur Pendant, now available in a more compact form, retains its fibreglass exterior while the Bruce Wall Light series extends its modular grid-like framework into three configurations: 3×3, 2×14 and 5×10.

The Bruce Wall Light series, a lineage that finds its genesis in Flack Studio’s work for the Ace Hotel Sydney, extends its grid-like framework into three configurations: 3×3, 2×14 and 5×10. These angular linear designs contrast the more organic curvature of the Tux series, illuminating – no pun intended – the collection’s embrace of dualities – malleable and solid, light and shadow.

With a focus on celebrating the inherent beauty of materials such as brass, aluminium, glass and fibreglass, the collection reflects the studios’ mutual belief in authenticity and longevity. Each piece is designed to respond to its spatial context, offering versatility in application whether as individual lights, paired arrangements or expansive installations.
