Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

SaltLick provides a dining experience with panoramic ocean views, where a fastidious selection of native materials and eccentric design features reinterpret beachside dining.

Set above KU DE TA beach club in Seminyak, SaltLick offers diners an experience with uninterrupted panoramic ocean views framed by expansive frameless glass walls, designed by DKO. The selection of native materials was fastidious, ensuring that each detail resonates with the traditional essence of the island. Locally sourced furniture and reclaimed Ulin timber add an authentic touch to the space, while forest brown marble with steak-like veining graces the tabletops. A limestone hand-carved wine bath and a sculptural bench add an anomalous aspect to the beachside dining. The restaurant was designed to complement the sunlight flooding through the windows for the ultimate sunset dining experience.

The layout is considered, with two kitchens oriented towards an inner courtyard, allowing guests to witness the culinary artistry in action. DKO curated an immersive dining space that is a feast for the five senses, considering sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. The aroma of wood fire blends with the salty breeze from the Bali Sea for a refined and relaxing ambiance.

SaltLick exemplifies a collaborative effort, with every design feature planned and executed by the respective masters of their field, whether it be the owner, chef, designer or builder. This cohesive approach ensures that every guest is treated to a dining experience that feels both familiar and surprising, capturing the spirit of Bali while setting a new standard in the culinary scene.

“KU DE TA’s legacy as Bali’s first beach club has been truly inspiring. It has been an honor to contribute to this heritage by creating a destination restaurant. We’re thrilled to create a unique dining experience that blends local charm with international sophistication, engaging all the senses to offer something truly special,” says Michael Drescher, Director of Interiors at DKO.
