The 'Bespoke' Issue

With Guest Editor Yasmine Ghoniem, we are launched headfirst into the world of unique and eclectic design. From architecture to interiors, there is nothing that can’t be enlivened with bespoke interventions. Granted, a stunningly beautiful home can be made by simply shopping for the best, but when the artist’s hand is introduced, some pure magic is possible. Whether it is an artwork or a new upholstery, a built-in component or a mosaic inlay, these gestures, whether bold or subtle, are what make the home unique.

Cool and calm with a muted palette of greens, Maison Verde is elegant yet relaxed and just the place for a family to live their best life.

Exemplifying quiet and luxurious living, Maison Verde oozes charm and sophistication that doesn’t overwhelm, but instead complements family life.

Designed by Weespaces, a design practice that specialises in residential projects, Maison Verde might have a French name and Francophile attitude, but it is right at home in the Indian city of Bangalore.

As a residence of 372-square-metres, Maison Verde is large with classic features and a contemporary design. The traditional bones of the home have been re-imagined with neoclassical style and tropical undertones, and the abundant greenery surrounding the home inspired the name of Maison Verde.

Principal designer, founder of Weespaces and lead on the project, Vinithra Amarnathan and her team, have created a residence of distinction with this project. There is a deft and deliberate hand at play, where restraint meets elegant sufficiency in the design.

Throughout the home the archway has influenced the interior, connecting the main living areas, framing each space and opening up to landscaped gardens.

The visitor steps inside Maison Verde to a dramatic foyer with classic black-and-white harlequin marble floor and a majestic, curved timber staircase sets the scene for the interior design.

With oakwood flooring and a subdued colour palette of soft greens and blues throughout the home, the aesthetic is calm and relaxed. The living room is bathed in the colour sage and features a stunning vaulted ceiling, while the adjacent dining area features a hand-painted watercolour mural in similar shades. A large curved fluted marble-topped bar is positioned on one side of the dining room and a navy-toned kitchen is located on the other.

Furniture pieces are authentic with organic forms, and the groupings are complemented by a custom artwork by Priyanka Aelay.

The first floor becomes the private domain with the sleeping quarters and a library/family room. With large botanical patterned wallpaper, the main bedroom is more tropical retreat than simply a space in which to sleep. In turn, the timber furnishings with rattan accents, gold pendant lights and floor-length sage-green curtaining encourage calm and rest.

The other bedrooms carry through the theme of modern sophistication with the second bedroom, a minimalist design in grey, beige and timber hues and vertical panelling. A framed M. Salah football jersey injects personality, and a timber-framed hammock net ceiling is a playful and unexpected addition.

The third bedroom is serene, with a contemporary four-poster bed, sage walls, deep green ceiling and black nightstands with brass accents that elevate the aesthetic.

A spectacular library/family room is both a place for individual contemplation and a space in which to gathering. With navy bookshelves that showcase books and objets, brown leather Chesterfield, light-coloured timber flooring and framed art, this is indeed a library of note.

While the interior is expertly designed, an outdoor garden nook is the place for escape. Framed by red brick walls and lush tropical plantings, this area features woven rope chairs and a black-top coffee table, while raised brick planters, soft lighting and a manicured lawn provide places to walk and the space for events and parties.

This is quiet luxury at its best, where inside and outdoors merge and the interior is refined and polished. Maison Verde is a credit to Amarnathan and her team, and it’s just the place to live your best life.
