Kitchen & Bathroom Issue

Kitchens and bathrooms are, arguably, the most consequential rooms in the home — and almost always the first to be considered. Whether approached through renovation or new build, their design has the power to recalibrate how a home is lived in and experienced. For this issue, our guest editor, Mardi Doherty, principal of Studio Doherty, explores what it truly means to transform these pivotal spaces — and why thoughtful design in kitchens and bathrooms delivers dividends far beyond the purely functional. Her insights both as an architect and as her own client give an open and honest account of the thinking behind creating a home.

Gaggenau

Gaggenau expands its Vario cooling Expressive series with 11 new models, including wine climate cabinets that automatically bring bottles to their ideal serving temperature.

Gaggenau has expanded its Vario cooling Expressive series with 11 new refrigeration models, bringing refrigerators, freezers, fridge-freezers and wine climate cabinets together within a modular system designed as much around architecture as appliance performance.

The collection can be installed as individual appliances or aligned side by side to create a larger cooling ensemble. Handleless doors, flush surfaces and consistent proportions establish continuity across the range, while interiors combine dark brushed stainless steel, anthracite aluminium and glass with gradually activated warm white LED lighting.

“We approached every detail with purpose – from the alignment of each shelf to the tone of the interior lighting,” says Gaggenau industrial designer Mikkel Brandt Bugge. “Our goal was to create a calm, coherent experience where function and materiality work quietly together.”

Beyond the visual consistency, the series incorporates a professional freshness system to maintain stable temperature and humidity, while selected models include integrated cameras. The appliances are also compatible with Gaggenau Home Connect for remote access and visibility.

Among the more significant additions are new wine climate cabinets featuring automatic tempering programs. Using infrared sensors in the upper and middle compartments, the system brings bottles to their appropriate serving temperature according to wine type and quantity. Users are given an estimated completion time and notified through the cabinet lighting and Home Connect app once the selected temperature has been reached.

The cabinets accommodate up to 110 or 68 bottles depending on the model and include soft-close shelves, a dedicated presentation area, UV protection and activated charcoal filters. Red, white, rosé and sparkling wines can each be tempered according to their respective settings.

The material language continues inside, where dark brushed stainless steel is paired with solid oak elements. Warm LED illumination offers three lighting scenarios and can be further customised through Home Connect.

“We didn’t just create a wine climate cabinet. We developed a system that honours the ritual of wine – from storage to serving – with the same care as a winemaker would,” says Sven Baacke, Head of Design at Gaggenau.

For architects and designers, the broader Vario cooling Expressive series offers flexibility in how refrigeration is incorporated into a kitchen, whether as a single appliance or a coordinated bank of cooling, freezing and wine storage.

The full range is rolling out across international markets, including Asia-Pacific.
